Chapter Four
âI was...well, I was going to volunteer at the clinic for a while.â He glanced at her to gauge her reaction.
She seemed to study him for a moment, her smile fading. âReally?â He couldnât tell what she thought of that.
âYep. Iâm there at least once a week. And weâve been planning that New Yearâs Eve fundraiser.â One heâd hoped to invite Maya to, but he hadnât worked up the courage. A first date on New Yearâs Eve was a lot of pressure. âAfter that, I was going to have dinner, if I could find somewhere to eat. Iâd like your company.â
âYouâve been planning the clinic fundraiser? Mrs. G mentioned it, but not that you were involved. Youâre a man of many talents.â She placed a finger on her lips, as if she had to consider his words, or keep herself from blurting out something not-so-nice. âOkay. Are you going to dress like Santa?â Her grin had returned, now mischievous.
âNo, I leave that to the pros.â
âHuh. I may or may not have an elf costume.â
âThen maybeââ
âForget I said anything. Iâm more of a grinch than an elf. Besides, once I get home, Iâm sticking there. So, letâs do this clinic thing and then weâll see. Okay?â
He nodded and ushered her out. At least she hadnât asked him to find out if she could go home. He wasnât ready for this Christmas gift to end.
He helped her into his car and they drove off slowly through the frosty landscape. Houses dotted the streets, followed by the shops of Main Street. There werenât any other cars on the road today. Loving didnât get many, if any, tourists in winter. That was something he hoped to change, at least enough to bring new life, and money, to the town, without hurting its charm and local businesses. The old drug store was closed for Christmas, as it looked like the other storefronts were. Soon, the church at the other end of the street would be having the morning service, and some places might open briefly in the afternoon.
He headed out toward the newish clinic. He and his brothers had donated to help save it. Maybe if there had been something like it when his mom had been pregnant with their sister, both of them would be alive today. He took the grief of their deaths and pushed it into his purpose for the day.
He turned up the music. As they drove, humming along to the Christmas songs with her painted him over in bright colors.
Mayaâd been interested in him as a person, and his art. Heâd wanted to talk more about it to her, but it was so personal, so important to him, he didnât know where to start. If sheâd asked him more questions, he might have told her, but she seemed to want to keep things low-key, and for now he was good with that. Maybe.
âDean,â she said as they drove. âYouâve been really kind. I... Well, will you tell me more about you?â
He warmed at her question.
